El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve
Natural Areas > Chiapas
Located in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas. The negative impact on the environment caused by human activity lead to its establishment as a protected area called “Natural and Typical area of the State of Chiapas” in 1972, with the main objective of conserving its quetzal and rare peacock. Years later, in 1990, it became a Federally Protected Area, with an area of 119,177 hectares in total.
This area is particularly important because of its natural characteristics, namely, the great variety of endemic species of birds, butterflies, many families of salamanders, and numerous species of mammals.
It also contains 10 of the 19 types of vegetation found in Chiapas, including two of the most threatened in Mexico, the cloud forest and rainforest.
