The Tiburón Ballena (Whale Shark) Biosphere Reserve was established in 2009 and is located on the northern coast of Quintana Roo. This reserve is one of the most interesting attractions in the state.

The reserve has an area of approximately 146,000 hectares on land and sea. As the name suggests, you will find the largest concentration of whale sharks in Mexico here.

This animal is a migratory species that is found in warm and temperate seas worldwide. It is about 16 meters long, weighs up to 25 tons and is grey with white spots on its back and a white belly. They make long annual journeys in search of food, reaching Mexican seas in May and staying until September.

The whale shark is currently considered an endangered species.
