The state of Tabasco is located in the Gulf of Mexico. Its low altitude and predominantly hot and humid climate make for an eternally green landscape, dotted with rivers, lakes, marshes and beaches.

Villahermosa, the capital, known as "The Emerald of the Southeast" was founded in the late sixteenth century by a community that was forced to move away from the coast because of the continuous pirate raids. Currently located on the banks of the Grijalva River, Villahermosa has two excellent museums: Parque Museo de la Venta, which displays impressive archaeological Olmec pieces on its grounds, and the Carlos Pellicer Museum of Anthropology, where Monument 6 of El Tortuguero can be found, where the completion of the thirteenth Baktun is registered, which coincides with the date of December 21, 2012.

Each year the city is decked out for its famous fair ExpoTabasco, which highlights the Ambassadors Ball, in which 17 girls represent the municipalities of the state in a competition for the title of Prettiest Flower of Tabasco.

The State has more than two thousand kilometers of rivers, a third of Mexico's fresh water, among which are the Grijalva and the Usumacinta, the largest and mightiest of the Republic.

The territory of Tabasco is an eco-tourism paradise full of protected areas such as the Biosphere Reserve Pantanos de Centla (Centla Wetlands), the ecological reserves Cañón del Usumacinta, Cascadas de Reforma, Rio Playa, the Agua Blanca State Park or the Protected Area of Yum-ká

Adventure and nature sports can be practiced by visiting the caves of Coconá and Cuesta Chica or by rafting the fast rivers of the state. One of them, the Grijalva, was named after the Spanish captain who came to this land in 1518. According to this theory, the river was originally called Tabasco.

The word Tabasco has been the subject of intense debate among linguists. According to the historian Manuel Gil y Saenz it comes from the name of the native chief Tabscood, which means "we were deceived" or "we were judged" and was given perhaps alluding to the battle of Centla (1519) won by Hernán Cortés, who received 20 women from the chief as a tribute, one of them, the famous Malinche.

The most widely researched architectural complex and the smallest of the site, the ceremonial precinct of the ancient Olmec city in Venta as well as the Mayan sites El Tortuguero, Comalcalco, Pomoná, San Claudio, Santa Elena, and very close to Guatemala, Moral Reforma are a must for culture lovers visiting Tabasco.
